Facing the Jung-ri beach in Yeongdo, Yeongdo Haenyeo Village welcomes guests with seafood caught daily by 16 female divers. The longest-serving "Halmae" has been diving for a remarkable 63 years. With an average age of 77, the divers are divided into two teams; eight divers begin diving at 7:30 a.m. and return at 2:00 p.m. laden with fresh seafood, while the remaining eight work in the kitchen to clean and prepare the catch, rotating every two days. Yeongdo Haenyeo Village operated on the seashore rocks for over 50 years with a truly raw and rugged atmosphere. It took on its current form five years ago when the district office took over its operation, combining it with the two-story Yeongdo Haenyeo Culture Exhibition Hall. As it became capable of accommodating more visitors, Yeongdo Haenyeo Village has solidified its position as a famous landmark in Yeongdo. The menu features sea squirts, rock sea squirts, conch, sea cucumbers, whelks, sea urchin roe, abalone, octopus, chopped raw octopus, and gimbap, but the most popular item is the assorted platter, which serves a variety of seafood on a single table. A special delicacy available at Yeongdo Haenyeo Village is gimbap topped with savory and mild sea urchin roe, eaten just like sushi. It is said that the taste became widely known after TV personality Baek Jong-won was shown eating gimbap topped with sea urchin roe on a broadcast. Enjoying fresh seafood with the backdrop of the endless Yeongdo coastline stretching before your eyes is truly a delicacy one can experience in Busan.
