Pyeonghwa Tteok Gongbang, which opened inside Bongdeok Market and later relocated to the main road outside, is a traditional local rice cake shop started by the mother-in-law and now continued by CEO Choi Im-sook, who has been running it for 25 years. Operated by CEO Choi's family, the shop begins its day at 4:30 a.m. with everyone coming in to make rice cakes together. Known as the originator of Daegu honey rice cakes, Pyeonghwa Tteok Gongbang was famous in the Gyeongbuk region even when the mother-in-law was running it. It captivated people's taste buds with a unique honey rice cake made by plunging white glutinous rice cakes into sweet brown sugar water, rather than the honey rice cakes we are familiar with. The dough recipe is distinctive from the start, involving soaking glutinous rice in water infused with corn silk and then kneading it by hand. When these glutinous rice cakes are mixed with brown sugar and a syrup made by combining pears and a secret powder, the honey rice cake that can only be tasted at Pyeonghwa Tteok Gongbang is complete. When you dip a glutinous rice cake, made using only 100% domestic glutinous rice, into brown sugar water and pop it in your mouth, the chewy texture and sweet taste melt away on your tongue. The saying, "There may be people who have never eaten it, but there are no people who have only eaten it once," likely applies to this very place. You cannot help but be surprised once again by the reasonable price of 3,000 won for 15 pieces. Delivery is available nationwide, and the shop gained immense popularity across the country through a past pop-up on The Hyundai.com. In addition to honey rice cakes, they sell a variety of other rice cakes such as nutritious rice cakes, red bean paste slices, mugwort mochi, potato rice cakes, and steamed rice cakes, showcasing a diverse menu featuring seasonal ingredients. They use only healthy ingredients, sourced weekly for the main rice and glutinous rice, and grains from a supplier they have been trading with for over 20 years. These rice cakes are usually all sold out by 6 PM. CEO Choi, who says that honesty and sincerity are the two highest values, spends another busy day taking orders for rice cakes in a gentle and kind voice.
