We stand before a camera when we want to record a moment. Can a single photograph, obtained after waiting days as the subject of a photographer who carefully presses the shutter, really be easily forgotten? Lee Seok-ju, CEO of Seokju Photo Studio, chose analog film photography as the method to fully capture the faces of those who willingly join him on that long journey. Unlike digital photography, where one simply presses the shutter, analog film photography requires manually adjusting the proper exposure and focus, breathing in sync with the subject to press the shutter, and going through 16 processes—including developing, fixing, washing, and drying—before a single photograph is finally produced. CEO Lee explains that if one quietly gazes at the photos produced by this method, which might seem inconvenient and even foolish, one can encounter the true photographs hidden within the convenience of digital technology. This perfectly reflects his motto of focusing on capturing the unique atmosphere of each subject by seizing the large and small light and shadows within their three-dimensional faces, rather than simply focusing on their glamorous appearance. Darkroom work is also the identity of Seokju Photo Studio; although it may appear to be simple and repetitive, nothing—from the chemical mixture and optimal temperature to the processing time—can be done carelessly. This is because even the slightest error can result in a completely different outcome. That is also why, despite having done this work for over a decade, he still feels both nervous and excited. Born and raised in Daegu, a city that holds a pioneering position in the history of modern Korean photography, CEO Lee witnessed the golden age of the industry firsthand. With the Daegu Photo Biennale still held every two years, he is effectively tracing that trajectory. However, feeling regret over the reality that film photography culture is gradually fading past its heyday, CEO Lee has been slowing down the pace of the world for 12 years by adhering to traditional methods, even if they are slow and unpolished.
