The name "Mori" (もり) was chosen for its ease of pronunciation in any language, derived from the Japanese reading of the word for "forest." Just as the name suggests, the space of Mori, a vintage furniture shop, traces its origins back to CEO Shim Jae-hyung's time studying abroad. While studying architecture in Japan, CEO Shim was captivated by furniture created by famous architects; upon returning to Korea, he began making furniture at a woodworking workshop. Building up his affection for furniture layer upon layer, he opened Mori in 2019 with his wife, Ham Cho-rom. As he collected vintage furniture from various countries, he became increasingly immersed in that boundless world the more he learned. Experiencing the unique characteristics of vintage furniture—made decades or centuries ago and no longer produced or made from materials currently unavailable—and the process of buying furniture overseas and conversing with dealers about the anecdotes behind the pieces were incredibly fascinating. CEO Shim's experiences and perspective are infused throughout Mori. While the store primarily features furniture by renowned architects and designers, it also introduces "Unknown" items—pieces with unclear origins—based on the couple's personal taste, provided they possess interesting backstories or unique designs and structures. When designing the space, other interior elements are minimized to highlight the furniture, with the utmost priority placed on a comfortable viewing flow. Perhaps that is why the furniture, each possessing its own distinct charm, stands out so prominently within this space resembling a blank canvas of white walls. The vintage furniture carefully selected by Mori can be found not only in Daegu but also at various exhibitions and pop-ups held elsewhere. Examples include exhibitions at 'Momos Coffee' in Busan and the 'Seobo Foundation,' formerly the studio of artist Park Seo-bo. Although held irregularly, the concept and composition vary depending on the space, making for a thoroughly enjoyable viewing experience. Rather than the brand itself drawing attention, Mori aims to assist customers on their journey to fully discover their own tastes.
